As the temperature of the sea surface rises, a higher amount of water vapor becomes available via evaporation to be transported northward by low level surges of southerly wind. Statistics suggest effective moisture transport increases significantly as water temperatures in the northern Gulf of California exceed 28C. This moisture translates into a dramatic increase of convectively available potential energy (CAPE).
